The cause of death for 41-year-old Bobbie Jean Carter, a former makeup artist and the sister of the late Aaron Carter and Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, has been released.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner in Florida has determined that Carter died from intoxication, by the combined effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine, according to E! News and People. Her death was reportedly ruled as accidental.
USA TODAY has reached out to the medical examiner's department.
Billie Jean Carter died Dec. 23 after she was found unresponsive at Tampa, Florida, home by fire rescue crews.
"They discovered a woman, later identified as Bobbie Jean Carter, in a bathroom unresponsive," the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office told USA TODAY in a Dec. 27 statement. "She was immediately transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where she was declared dead by hospital medical staff at 8:02 a.m."
During their investigation of Carter's death, HCSO deputies learned that Carter was on probation for cocaine possession, according to the statement. However, Carter had "not used any narcotics since her release from prison," per the accounts given to police by Carter's roommates.
She died a little more than a year after her younger brother, Aaron Carter, died in his Southern California home at 34.
Carter's sister, Angel Carter, confirmed her sister's passing on her official Instagram page on Dec. 24. Angel shared a tribute, which featured childhood photos of her sister.
"To my older sister Bobbie. You had a great sense of humor, and a lively spirit. Growing up, I was your baby, and you were my best friend," Angel wrote at the time. "Life wasn't fair to you, that I know. Sometimes, it feels like you didn't have a shot, no matter what."
Older brother Nick Carter, 43, paid tribute to his sister in a Jan. 4 Instagram post in which he captioned a childhood photo of the two of them with the following message: "It may take a lifetime to fully process the loss my family has endured over the years – most recently, with the sudden passing of our sister Bobbie Jean. I am completely heartbroken."
The Backstreet Boys member added, "Thank you for all your love and kind words. We are reminded again that life is precious, fleeting and to cherish the time we have with the ones we love. I know she is finally at peace with God. I love you BJ."
